Why use lubrication?

The goal of lubrication is to reduce friction between surfaces in order to:

  • increase the lifespan of machine components,
  • reduce energy consumption,
  • avoid rises in temperature,
  • protect surfaces (against rust and corrosion, for example).

In other words, the purpose of lubricants is to form a protective film between sliding surfaces.

Lubricants must also be formulated in harmony with Man and his Environment. Special care is taken to avoid any toxic or dangerous ingredients.

The different kinds of lubricants:

  1. Solid lubricants (graphite, molybdenum disulphide, tungsten disulphide, polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE, ceramics, and so on) are either used in powder form, or are incorporated into other lubricant bases.
  2. Liquid lubricants, more widely known as oils, can be of mineral (petroleum-based), synthetic, or natural (animal- or plant-based) origin, to which additives are incorporated. In some cases, different oils may be mixed together.
  3. Plastic lubricants (greases or pastes) are produced through the dispersion of a thickener in a liquid lubricant.
